The Dorsal Differentiation of Velar From Alveolar Stops in Typically Developing Children and Children With Persistent Velar Fronting

چکیده
Purpose This study has two key aims: first, to provide developmental articulatory norms for the alveolar–velar distinction in 30 English-speaking typically developing (TD) children; second, illustrate utility of reported measures classifying and quantifying speech children with a history persistent velar fronting as they develop contrast longitudinally. Method involved secondary data analysis UltraSuite corpus comprising ultrasound tongue imaging recordings materials from typical longitudinal five undergoing visual biofeedback intervention. We present new coronal dorsal differentiation: KTMax KT crescent area. These distinguish /k/ /t/ by magnitude this absolute spatial terms (mm linear difference). For children, we report these corner vowel contexts. then compare productions disorders, before, during, after Results Both reliably distinguished TD children. There was an effect vowel, larger KTmax area /a/ /o/ contexts than /i/ context. The showed values near zero before intervention, showing complete merger between /t/. During variable values. Post within range Conclusions provides derived differentiation alveolar stops By applying acquire contrast, see that is acquired articulatorily gradient manner.

Contrast and Post-Velar Fronting in Russian
There is a well-known rule of Russian whereby /i/ is said to be realized as [Y] after non-palatalized consonants. Somewhat less well-known is another allophonic rule of Russian whereby only [i], and not [Y], can follow velars within a morphological word. This latter rule came about due to a sound change in East Slavic called postvelar fronting here: kY > ki (and similarly for the other velars)....
متن کاملSupralaryngeal control in Korean velar stops
The aim of this study was to investigate the supralaryngeal control of the production of the Korean three-way contrast in velar stops. First, an EMA-experiment with three Korean speakers was carried out, and the kinematic properties of the tongue back were analyzed (length of the deceleration phase of the movement, peak velocity, peak acceleration, amplitude and duration of the looping movement...
متن کاملOn the interaction of velar fronting and labial harmony.
This article documents the typological occurrence and interactions of two seemingly independent error patterns, namely Velar Fronting and Labial Harmony, in a cross-sectional investigation of the sound systems of 235 children with phonological delays (ages 3;0 to 7;9). The results revealed that the occurrence of Labial Harmony depends on the occurrence of Velar Fronting, and that, when these pr...
متن کاملAcoustics and perception of velar softening for unaspirated stops
This paper provides articulatory, acoustic and perceptual data in support of the hypothesis that the velar softening process through which /k/ becomes /tP/ is based on articulation rather than on acoustic equivalence if operating on unaspirated stops. Production data for unaspirated /k/ are analyzed for five speakers of Majorcan Catalan, where the velar stop phoneme exhibits (alveolo)palatal or...
